C9 Corvette: Everything We Know
The ninth-generation Corvette is widely reported to be coming, and almost everything written about it so far is a mix of credible reporting and wishful thinking. This page keeps the two apart. Every claim below is tagged Confirmed (Chevrolet has said it), Reported (credible outlets citing sources), or Rumor (speculation), with the source linked at the bottom. I owned a 2020 C8 Stingray 2LT Z51, so the last section is the one I actually care about: what the C9 means if you own or are shopping a C8 right now. I'll update this page as real news lands — the changelog is at the end.
The 30-second version
- Timing: public debut late 2028, production 2029, sold as a 2030 model year (reported).
- Platform: a revised version of the C8's Y2 mid-engine architecture, built in Bowling Green (reported).
- Power: internal combustion — a naturally aspirated pushrod V8 at the base, hybrids above it; not an EV (reported).
- Look: heavily influenced by the 2025 Corvette CX concept, softer and more cohesive than the C8 (reported).
- Money: roughly $78,000 to start, $220,000 at the top (rumor).
Timeline: When the C9 Corvette Arrives
ReportedGM Authority reported in April 2026, citing sources familiar with the program, that the C9 is scheduled to enter production during the 2029 calendar year, with a planned public debut late in the 2028 calendar year and an official launch for the 2030 model year. That is a shift from earlier reporting — GM Authority itself had pointed to a 2029 model year back in January 2023.
ReportedMotorTrend's reporting (as summarized by CorvetteBlogger on July 30, 2026 and CorvSport) has C9 production starting in 2029 as a 2030 model, with the base Stingray arriving first and Z06, ZR1, and Grand Sport variants following. AutoGuide (July 31, 2026) expects it in showrooms in summer 2029 as a 2030 model.
RumorNobody outside GM knows the exact reveal date, and Chevrolet has not announced one. The honest read: expect to see the car between late 2028 and 2029, and expect the first ones in driveways as 2030 models.
Platform: Still Mid-Engine, Still Bowling Green
ReportedGM Authority reported in January 2023, citing anonymous sources, that the C9 would ride on a revised variant of the GM Y2 platform that underpins the C8, with production at Bowling Green, Kentucky. AutoGuide describes it as a thoroughly updated — and hopefully lighter — version of the C8's mid-engine architecture. The mid-engine layout is not going anywhere.
Powertrain: V8 First, Hybrids Above, EV Elsewhere
ReportedGM Authority reported in January 2023, citing anonymous sources, that the C9 would be internal-combustion powered and not directly related to the Corvette EV sedan and Corvette EV crossover GM is developing as separate products. MotorTrend expects a naturally aspirated pushrod V8 at the base of the range with hybrid performance models above it, building on the hybrid systems in today's C8 variants.
ReportedThe engine expected at the bottom of the C9 lineup is the new LS6 6.7-liter naturally aspirated V8 — 535 horsepower and 520 lb-ft — which debuts across the 2027 lineup: the Stingray, the Grand Sport, and Grand Sport X (full 2026-vs-2027 breakdown in my lineup explainer). Chevrolet confirms those LS6 specs for 2027; its use in the C9 is MotorTrend's expectation — CorvetteBlogger's summary says the LS6 will "most likely" serve as the powertrain bridge into the next generation. AutoGuide pairs it with the eight-speed dual-clutch.
RumorAutoGuide and MotorTrend both float a dual-front-motor hybrid setup (versus today's single front motor) and a fully electric Corvette at some point in the early 2030s — as its own thing, not as the C9.
Design: What the Corvette CX Concept Tells Us
ConfirmedAt Monterey Car Week in August 2025, Chevrolet revealed the Corvette CX concept — a quad-motor, 2,000-plus-horsepower electric design study with a fighter-jet-style forward-opening canopy and a fan-driven downforce system — alongside the CX.R Vision Gran Turismo racing variant. Both are drivable in Gran Turismo 7. Chevrolet said neither concept is intended for production but that both will inform Corvette design for years to come; in June 2026 a Chevrolet spokesperson also told Motor1 that images circulating online as a leaked C9 were the CX concept.
ReportedMotorTrend's sources say the C9 will be heavily influenced by the CX concept but "softer and more refined" — more cohesive exterior lines that recall the Coke-bottle hips of the front-engine Corvettes, without giving back the mid-engine performance gains. AutoGuide adds a cabin redesign emphasizing an open, connected layout. The biggest changes, per MotorTrend, will be visual.
Lineup and Pricing Expectations
ReportedRollout order, per MotorTrend: base Stingray first, then Z06, ZR1, and Grand Sport. Expect the familiar ladder — Z51, Grand Sport, Z06, ZR1 — to carry over in concept if not in exact form.
RumorMotorTrend and AutoGuide both put the price at about $78,000 for an entry car and $220,000 for the king-of-the-hill variant — estimates, not announcements. For context, a 2026 Stingray 1LT coupe started at $71,995 and the 2027 LS6-powered Stingray was announced at $73,495, both including destination (Chevrolet raised 2027 base prices $300 on September 28, 2026) — see my trim guide for the full 2026 price ladder — so a $78,000 C9 entry would be a modest step, not a leap.
What the C9 Means If You Own or Want a C8
This is the part that matters today. Three practical effects, in order of how sure I am:
- Used C8 prices have softened, and a coming C9 may add to that. CarBuzz put used Stingrays at just over $50,000 to start in November 2025. A reported next generation could give some buyers a reason to wait — that part is my read, not a measured effect. The price drivers are in my used C8 price breakdown. If you're buying, that's working for you.
- The C8 will be the "sorted" car for years. First-year cars of any new generation carry early-build risk — look at what the 2020 C8 went through in my common problems by year guide. A 2022–2025 C8 is a known, mature quantity. A 2030 C9 will not be, at first.
- Long-term value favors good examples, not the last of a generation per se. C8 retention is already strong — iSeeCars' 2026 study ranked it third-lowest in five-year depreciation (18.7%) among all vehicles. The depreciation math is in my depreciation guide. A well-optioned Z51 car with records will hold better than a base car regardless of what the C9 does.
My take: if you want a Corvette in the next three years, buy the C8 and enjoy the best used market the car has ever had. If you specifically want the next shape and can wait until 2029 or 2030, waiting is reasonable — just know you'll be paying new-car money for a first-year car. There is no version of this where a clean, well-kept C8 becomes a bad decision. If you're buying, start with the Ultimate C8 Corvette Buyer's Guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
When does the C9 Corvette come out?
Reporting from GM Authority (April 2026) puts C9 production start in calendar 2029, with a public debut late in calendar 2028 and an official launch as a 2030 model year. MotorTrend's reporting (summarized by CorvSport and CorvetteBlogger, July 2026) has production starting in 2029 for the 2030 model year, and AutoGuide (July 2026) expects showrooms in summer 2029 for the 2030 model year. Chevrolet has not announced a date or confirmed any of this. Treat late 2028 to 2029 as the reported reveal window and 2030 as the reported model year.
Will the C9 Corvette be electric?
Not according to current reporting. GM Authority reported in January 2023, citing anonymous sources, that the C9 would be internal-combustion powered and not directly related to the Corvette EV sedan and crossover GM is developing separately. MotorTrend expects a naturally aspirated pushrod V8 at the base of the lineup with hybrid performance models above it, building on the hybrid systems in today's C8 variants. A fully electric Corvette is speculated for the early 2030s, not as the C9 itself.
What engine will the C9 Corvette have?
The leading expectation is the new LS6 6.7-liter naturally aspirated V8 — 535 horsepower and 520 lb-ft of torque — which debuts across the 2027 Corvette Stingray, Grand Sport, and Grand Sport X and, per MotorTrend's reporting, will most likely serve as the powertrain bridge into the C9. Hybrid variants are expected above it. Chevrolet has not confirmed any engine for the C9.
Should I wait for the C9 or buy a C8 now?
If you want a Corvette in the next three years, buy the C8 — the C9 is not expected on dealer lots before 2029 (reported, not announced), first-year cars of any new generation carry early-build risk, and used Stingrays started at just over $50,000 in CarBuzz's November 2025 survey. If you specifically want the next design and can wait until 2029 or 2030, waiting is reasonable. The C8 has also held its value well: iSeeCars' 2026 study ranked it third-lowest in five-year depreciation among all vehicles (18.7%).

Changelog
- October 6, 2026 — Re-checked every claim on this page against current reporting: no new GM announcement about the C9, and no new credible timeline reporting since the July 30–31 MotorTrend and AutoGuide pieces. Corrected attribution (the 2029 production / 2030 model-year timeline comes from GM Authority, MotorTrend, and AutoGuide, not GM), labeled the MotorTrend and AutoGuide price figures as estimates, and replaced unsourced used-market claims with CarBuzz and iSeeCars data. Added Chevrolet's June 2026 statement to Motor1 that the widely shared "C9 leak" was the CX concept, and the September 28, 2026 $300 increase to 2027 Corvette base prices. Also made the FAQ visible, added the buyer's guide link, and replaced the related-guides list.
- August 22, 2026 — Clarified that the LS6 debuts across the 2027 Stingray, Grand Sport, and Grand Sport X (not Grand Sport only); added 2027 Stingray pricing context.
- August 22, 2026 — First published. Timeline per GM Authority (Apr 2026), MotorTrend/CorvetteBlogger (Jul 30, 2026), AutoGuide (Jul 31, 2026); CX concept details from Monterey Car Week 2025 coverage.
